In a solid effort by the entire team, the Washington Mystics outlasted the New York Liberty in game one of the Eastern Conference final.

This game was marked by brilliant performances all over the court, but the freshness of the Mystics played large down the stretch. Washington fell behind by 11 points in the first half, only to go on a 15-0 run, and trailed by 8 in the second half before their freshness and fitness payed dividends to their effort.

In spite of the big streaks by both teams in this game, much of the game was marked by match and match basket runs, where it seemed like neither team could miss. The Liberty are obviously a trememdously gifted team, but they have destiny against them this year, as the Mystic fans - the best in the league - are sky-high in support of their team, which only once reached the playoffs before this year, and had never won a single playoff game.

This series will be decided by sheer will; the will of the Liberty to remain dominant in the East versus the will of the Mystics to go above anyone's expectations.

I thought previously that the Mystics would get this far and lose the series. After their recent play, however, I think the Mystics have a legitimate chance to win the whole thing. But so do the other three teams.

But you have to love the opportunity to win one of two to get to the championship series.

Saturday nite's game will be interesting....Holdsclaw typically plays well in her home town. I think fatigue could possibly be the largest factor that may play into a Washington win.....

the pressure's on New York.......... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

I think New York wins Saturday Nite and Washington wins Sunday.
LA walks on into the finals with an extra day of rest.... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif

"the pressure's on New York.........."

You don't win 4 conference championships without dealing with it.

The Liberty will find a way. But it would be nice if we could keep the clamps on Chamique Holdsclaw. In every game between the two games this season, CH-1 has been a monster and we haven't dealt with her well, even when other's haven't stepped up.

On our side, I'm convinced we have two of the most worthless guards in the league. Teresa Witherspoon's job is to get assists and last night she couldn't even do that. How hard can it be to FIND TARI PHILLIPS IN THE SECOND HALF???? I know T-Spoon is old, I didn't know she was senile!

And can somebody tell Becky Hammon to play some defense when she's in the game. Is K.C. Cowgill her stunt double?

I found last night that I couldn't stop myself from rooting for the Liberty. As Nancy Lieberman would say, "All they do is win". They keep winning when people, such as myself, are saying they "can't" or "shouldn't" win. They're old. They're not athletic enough. They don't have a deep enough bench... Of course, the Liberty lost a game they should have won last night.

In keeping with my early season prediction re: Dales-Schuman of Newcomer of the Year, so, ok I was wrong, I hereby predict Stacey will go off, Holdsclaw will be herself, the rest will be good and the Mystics will get it done in the next game. I recall her first 5 minutes against OSU in the Big 12 Tournament in K.C.,,,

We'll see. Just wanted to step out there for the next game.
