On the radio they kept saying the attendence for the Drake/Baylor game was 10,074 and was a new Baylor record.

Good Job Baylor. It must not be spring break there. Oh wait everyone goes to Texas for Spring break.

Box score verifies 10,074.

Through Saturday + Baylor: 954,614

The announcers for the KSU-UA game are saying that the official attendance hasn't been announced yet, but is has to be over 11,000. They said there were only a few seats empty in one spot at the top of the arena, so it may in fact have been a sellout.

Official attendance just announced for the KSU game: 11,786.

With the previous games through Baylor at 954,614 the total now stands at a tidy 966,400.

Just 33,600 to go!

The total first round attendance for CU, ISU, OU, TTU, and UT was 36,659. If all the teams at least equal their first-round attendance, we'll make it! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Texas Tech-Mississippi State box is now up at the Texas Tech athletic website:
http://texastech.fansonly.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/031702aaa.html

Official attendance was 8,305.

Grand total is now at 974,705! Only 25,295 to go! We are gonna make it for sure!

mred
03-18-2002, 12:12 AM
Hmmm... We have a discrepancy. Yahoo says 9,305.

mred

ESPN agrees with yahoo. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/wbasketball/boxscore?gameId=224000006

Either the AP released a wrong attendance number, or Tech's own website is wrong.

What to do?

mred
03-18-2002, 12:17 AM
I assume one or the other will be corrected in the near future. Anyway, a Tech fan at the game will probably be able to tell us which one they announced at the arena.

Then the total is 974,705 with 25,295 left (as YCN said). I'm waiting on the Texas boxscore...

Got the Texas-UCSB attendance at the Gaucho website:
http://ucsbgauchos.fansonly.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/031702aaa.html

Attendance was 4,457.

Grand total now stand at 979,162, only 20,838 to go.

It's a mortal lock now, as ISU and OU combined will have well over that for their games. Looks like the ISU game will probably take us over the top.

I was kind of hoping it would be OU, but CU's crowd tonight isn't very large.

Not necessarily. ISU had about 7,500 for a 9PM Saturday game. Combine inexplicable attendance counting methods, the 9:30PM start, the fact that the family-oriented fan base will balk at such a late game on a school night, and the ISU spring break, and it's possible ISU's attendance will be around 7,000 again (with actual attendance over 9,000).

Actually it may be spring break for a lot of area schools, so maybe families will be willing to keep their kids up that late.

I'm shocked ISU and TTU have had such "low" attendance, given both schools are the flagship for women's basketball attendance in the big 12. I assumed both schools would almost sellout given their history of support for women's hoops.

mred

ISU attendance was hurt hard by the 9PM start time. I think Tech had some conflict with the MBB game, which was on the same day and may ave kept some people home to watch it on TV.

More excuses for ISU's low attendance:
1) Everyone there estimated actual attendance at 9 to 11 thousand, not the 7,500 reported. These are the same people who said the attendance at the ISU-Tech game was overstated, so I trust that they aren't inflating their estimations.

2) The game was televised. Probably didn't make a big difference.

3) ISU is on spring break. Also probably didn't make a big difference.

vickie1ok
03-18-2002, 02:30 AM
Televised games do make a difference at OU. But we are also on spring break and it has not made a difference. I'm just surprised that ISU and TTECH fans, given that they are the best supporters of women's hoops, haven't had sellout crowds. It just scares me a little, because I want to see the sport grow.

Official CU-LSU attendance figure is up on their website: http://cubuffs.fansonly.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/031702aaa.html

The attendance was 4,223.

Grand total is now at 983,415, with only 16,585 needed to reach 1,000,000.

And with that, I'm going to bed.

mred, believe me, there were nowhere near 11,000 at the game. The attendance was terribly disappointing. I am not sure that the official number is wrong, considering the seats taken out for the press, bands, etc. It was literally one of the worst crowds of the entire season. The ONLY reason I can think of is the start time, and on a Saturday night that seems strange. In previous years, the second-round game was always played on Sunday during spring break and we always had nearly a full house. Those games were televised also. Monday's crowd might be worse, which would be a shame. At least the people who show up are loud!

It's actually possible we could fall short of a million by a piddling few thousand (unless ISU wins, in which case we'll make it up next week.)

I don't know about Iowa State, but OU's attendance DOES not have a lot of college students......a lot of elementary and high school, yes, but the college students....like at TTU have been slow to turn out for women's basketball.

I'm thinking that ISU has a huge college student turnout.

Not as much as you might think. Most of ISU's attendance are families and older people (as is the case for WBB around the country). ISU gets plenty of students at the game, but not as many as there are for MBB.

mred, I think OU and Iowa have a similar crowd for women's hoops in that both states have a strong rural tradition in girls basketball. (wow, just watching a little home cooking officiating for purdue right now...) I don't know about ISU, but OU draws much better on a Saturday than a weekday, which tells me they are drawing fans from around the state who can't always make it in for weekday games. Hence, why we see more families and young kids at games and not enough students.

mred
03-18-2002, 10:13 PM
I checked once, and ISU draws over 2000 more on Saturdays compared to games of similar date and importance on weekdays.

The OU 2cd round game was shown on the ESPN site as having 11,245 fans and the ISU game as having 7,621. It looks like we may have slid in to the record by the skin of our teeth! But it does look like we are in with 2,281 to spare! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

You heard it here first! Thanks to the hard work by mred, YCN and the rest of you, we HoopScoopers have been more informed about attendence and the Million Fan March than anyone else. You have scooped the nation and Big 12 Fans have indeed set the record. According to Joni James of the conference office a news release will come out today. After careful checking and rechecking the final number is:

ONE MILLION TWO THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE.

Is that KOOL or what! It has been done and it has been done by the best teams in the best conference in the country. Anyone else just gets to compete for second place! GO BIG XII!

I wonder why the Million Fan March promotion was dropped this year?

Didn't anybody at the conference offices have any faith in this league drawing fans?

Great news to hear about the press release today - can't wait to read it!

I don't think they ever dropped it, like Mred said.....

heck if their million fan march is anything like their website,
well.........what else needs to be said. I was going to drop them an email yesterday and let them know WE HAD succeeded, but there is no way to email them.

Some observations on attendance

Ok, I'm a little obsessed with this subject but here is why. Earlier this year I heard Cincinatti Bearcat WBB fans complain that no one was giving them "props" for their great team. Part of the response was "If you draw less than a thousand fans in your own city why should anybody else notice you".

I can tell you from observation that KSU never got much notice from the KC Star or papers other than Manhattan & Topeka until they had some sell-outs. Then all of a sudden people took notice and we got press and air time. I think you can see that all over. Its all well and good for us to whine about TV coverage etc. but if you can't prove people are interested in your sport enough to come and see it in person why should an advertiser spend good money to put the sport on TV? Marketing execs are in business and can't justify to their CEO's or Boards spending money to put WBB on TV just because a few of us fanatics want them to. They can only justify it if it looks like people are interested and may buy the products or services they are trying to sell.

I know that's obvious, but don't think that anyone is going to promote this sport for us because it has its own intrinsic merit. Its "Show me the MONEY". Are eyeballs attached to people with wallets going to watch?

Additionally I care because I belive if we draw fans we will be able to draw good players. I know there is a little "chicken or egg" deal in this but when we can toot our horn about attendance we ought to. It helps feed the loop.

Lastly, as a WBB fanatic I'd like some confimation that I'm not crazy to love this sport. Why shucks, there are a MILLION other fools out there who also think Big XII WBB is worth getting out to see.

GO BIG 12 and THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to each and every fan who came out to see a game and a special THANK YOU to all of you who promoted the sport and got other folks interested in attending.

A special thanks to Tennessee, Texas Tech, Iowa State and Texas for building and holding WBB fan support in the nation and the Big 12. You were the Jackie Robinsons of WBB. You laid the ground work for us newbies.

I had started a spread sheet with the attendence totals in the middle of February. I doubt checked my totals with the totals from the press release and the only difference I had was I was 10 off on the Texas A&M total.

Do you think we can do it again next year? Do you think it could done before the NCAA tournament? I don't think we will get 7 home bids again.

Way to go on your tracking.

I don't know if we can do it again. I think it will be a challenge. KSU may get better non-con attendace since I think there will be a LOT more season tickets sold. In 2000-2001 we had 173 season tickets sold. This year it was around 1,400. Next year? KSU's previous season record was 49,000 plus. This year 122,000 plus. We obviously won't see any more gains like that at KSU.

I would have some hope for a KU improvement but even if it comes it may take time to build. NU, maybe? The teams that lose a lot of seniors will have a challenge in promoting interest in their new players if the team performance falls off. Then there is OSU. That program sounds like a slow motion disaster. If ol Terry Don Phillips doesn't watch it he will really cripple what's left of that program for a long time. I can't imagine the pain of going to witness that poor program struggle along under the kind of leadership they are getting. Attendance has got to suffer even more.

It would be interesting to hear what other HoopScoopers think about our chances of repeating.

With the young UT team coming on strong this year, I think our attendance will pick up significantly next season. I've already had a two sets of friends let me know they want season tickets next year.

Have absolutely no idea about OU; we still have an Ada, Oklahoma connection in Caton Hill. Have 2 players coming in from Oklahoma, neither of which is far from Norman.

Heck, I'll be there......Action Jackson, Caton Hill, Antoinette Wadsworth......I can't wait to see Wadsworth play, those exhibition games made us drool, Jackson can jump higher than I imagined.

I suspect OU should be able to maintain it's average, though depending on how they do, they may be affected.......who knows, the way fans come out at OU when you say final four or national champion is beyond me......so, I have no idea how they will react to a fairly new team especially if they lose a few games.

Just know I'll be there, win or lose.
