Most talented high school basketball players have one objective when they step on the court: score, score and score some more.
Monique Smalls, a junior at The Woodlands College Park who has orally committed to play for the Texas Tech women’s team beginning in 2009-10, would rather keep her opponents from scoring.
The 5-foot-4 point guard was named District 15-5A Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, and this year Smalls is averaging 8.3 steals through 31 games.
“She’s an incredible defensive player,” College Park head coach Kip Anderson said. “She’s like a thief. She will steal the ball from you quick.”
Smalls does much more for ninth-ranked College Park, which is 28-3 and 6-0 in district play. She’s already recorded two triple-doubles in 15-5A play, and she narrowly missed a quadruple-double earlier this month — posting 16 points, 10 assists, 10 steals and nine rebounds against Conroe Oak Ridge.
Smalls is averaging 12.3 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, and according to Anderson, she also brings some intangible qualities to the Lady Cavaliers.
“She’s a vocal leader, and she leads by example,” said Anderson, who added that Smalls is an unselfish player who often looks to pass before shooting. “She’s an awesome kid in every aspect. You all will be very happy with Monique Smalls.”

She's a very unselfish player with an incredible court presence and ability to find and distribute the basketball to her teammates. Monique is a very quick point guard able to breakdown the press and push the ball up the court. Most opposing players underestimate her quickness and range to her advantage, making her a force on defense.”
