Please keep Cristin Vitek and her family in your thoughts. She's a Baylor pitcher from 3-4 years back. You might remember she set the NCAA record with 28 strikeouts in one game.
Cristin is in ICU in Katy with Pneumonia and a serious kidney infection. She's been in an induced coma, and although she's stabilized a bit at last word, is still in very serious condition dealing with potential organ failure. She's a strong young lady, so I'm betting on her beating this thing, but any thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated by her family.

We here at the ChiBears household will certainly hold her and her family up in our prayers. We remember Cristin and her performances on the field.
Here are wishes for a speedy recovery and for strength and peace in the interim.

Things seem to be better, though she's still not out of the woods. She's no longer on 100% respirator, and is often conscious and communicative. The source of the infection is known, but the method of treatment is unknown, partially because she's allergic to penicillin.
She's definitely a determined young lady. She was a full-time college athlete while also double-majoring, in pre-med and accounting no less!!!! I dare say you can't do that without being tough and fighting through adversity.
Thanks to everyone for your heartfelt concern.

Any updates?
I did a search and found this most recent from the Waco Tribune:
Former Baylor softball pitcher Vitek still in ICU
Saturday, February 02, 2008
From staff reports
Former Baylor pitcher Cristin Vitek remains in intensive care at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital after suffering acute kidney failure last week, according to Baylor softball coach Glenn Moore.
Moore said Vitek has undergone kidney dialysis during recent days and has been assisted by a respirator.
“It’s been a real roller coaster,” Moore said. “She’s had some good days and bad days. It’s amazing how many e-mails she’s received from people, and many have come from the softball community across the country. One night, she got about 250 e-mails.”
Vitek was a two-time all-Big 12 pitcher for Baylor from 2002-05. She set an NCAA record with 28 strikeouts in 16 innings in a 1-0 win over North Carolina in the 2004 regionals at Getterman Stadium.

Former Baylor pitcher and current NCAA single game strikeout record holder Cristin Vitek is in the ICU in her hometown of Katy, Texas with acute kidney failure.
She contracted bacterial pneumonia (Group A Streptococcus) that got into her blood and resisted all treatment. Her body began to try to conserve energy and her kidneys went into failure.
She began dialysis yesterday (1/29/08) to remove retained fluid from her body, and responded well. They removed 6.5liters and are continuing again today.
She has been in ICU since wednesday the 23rd and is still there with the doctors not giving any near release date. Cristin is curently a student at Texas Chiropractic College in the houston area town of Pasadena.
I would just like to let the readers here and viewers of channel 10 and BAYLOR BEARS everywhere know about one of the Bear's family.

Sorry, I've been following this mainly on the other boards and had forgotten to update this one. The latest news does seem like a positive turn.
One fairly amazing note about Cristin during her Baylor days - she was able to fulfill all the duties that come with being a scholarship athlete while pursuing a double major ... IN PRE-MED AND ACCOUNTING!! That's some pretty serious dedication and time management skills needed for that combo.
Thanks again to all for their care and support.

The news is getting better
Wednesday 2/13
3 weeks since first admitted to ICU
The doctor has said that Cristin's kidneys are starting to work on their own! She is gaining strength every day now, and is on the road to start eating solid foods! They had Cristin sitting up again this morning, and had her walking, again. In fact, she was able to walk all the way around the nurses' station, which is approximately 240 feet! The nurses and volunteers, who have been taking care of her, are all amazed at how strong she is and at how well she is doing. They all have been checking in on her from time-to-time and have even started calling her their "Miracle Girl!" They are planning on coming back this afternoon to help her walk some more; because the more she walks, the stronger her lungs will get! She is even strong enough now to be able to hold all the emails and cards to read them herself! Cristin just can't believe how many people have been praying for her and asking about her! The entire Vitek Family are all extremely touched by all of love shown for them during this critical time in their lives. They know that without all the prayers, Cristin would not have made it to this point. They are forever grateful to everyone. The power of prayer works -- Cristin is proof.
Please keep Cristin in your thoughts and prayers and keep sending her messages! She still needs all the support and encouragement she can get while she fights every day to get better and better!
