Two teams with identical records in and out of conference play. And two teams badly in need of a win. Will it be the Buffs or will it be the Jayhawks who will have the mental toughness Tuesday night in Boulder?
KU is coming off their first conference win while the Buffs are coming off their third consecutive conference loss. CU has a height and talent advantage in the post will they be able to effectively use it?
The game is scheduled to be televised on Fox Rocky Mountain @ 7 pm MST.

Interesting article in this morning's BDC on the issues plaguing the team since the beginning of conference play.

Let's be clear here, Lady Buff ..... a BUFFS win. ;)
I think this has to be a must win for the buffs if they have ncaa aspirations. They have not done well on their home court and that has got to change starting tonight.
I agree 100% rock. It's time to see some more 'growing up' on this team

6-4 KU so far TO, didn't catch the time, but it just started.
15-6 KU @ 11:13 or so.
Nothing is falling for CU but McFarland is going to the Freethrow line.

Kansas has busted out to a 15-7 lead, early though, 11:37 left in the half.

Everytime I yell for CU, they play like this
KU's defense is unsettling the Buffs
Turnover fest
Can we get a little traveling music?
18-8 KU around 8 minutes.
18-10 now

more turnovers than field goals by both teams

27-22 cu now almost halftime
CU is looking good now with a 21-4 run to end the half.
22-29 CU.
Looking good sounds a bit relative with all the TO's. The Buffs are starting to hit their shots including treys.
KU scores only 4 points from the 8:15 mark to the end of the half! Go figure.

Good move by Kathy in taking Jackie out of the game. They were really focussing too much on her and it made their offense stagnant. Once she subbed for her, CU's offense started to open up with ball movement and isolation drives for buckets.
I think the Buffs may suffer a little bit from CP3 Syndrome.

Not good news for those who picked Jackie in Hoopla! though.:(
I think I will take my sore head to bed secure in the knowledge that I will start this pick-em session at 0-1. Kansas has a team that could play well with Colorado but it does not look good for them right now. Me and three other logic challenged pickers picked KU. I thought they were a good long shot. Now it looks like they are a very long shot unless they figure out how to get back on track. If the Buffs keep hitting threes the Jayhawks are not going to come back in this game.
Wow, KU has gone something like 11 straight possessions without a single shot attempt. That's unreal.
Back to the drawing board for Bonnie, because her team can't even do enough right to take a shot right now.

Excellent observation and right on. When Jackie was on the bench at the end of the first half and the Buffs had a trio of freshmen on the court they began to move the ball better and get good looks.
Overall, I thought CU played poorly, but they did figure out what they needed to do on offense from the end of the first half through the rest of the game. It was encouraging to see three freshmen make a big difference in the game. Spears was more or less her usual self (14 points, 8 rebounds 3 steals), but Courtney Dunn and Britney Blythe played their best games of the season. Both really helped settle down the offense and made few mistakes. And both hit shots with the shot clock running down. Dunn played 25 minutes and had 9 points and five rebounds with only one turnover. Blythe played 21 minutes and scored 8 points while assisting twice and committing zero turnovers.
The Buffs three-point shooting has headed south and really needs to return. They were 3-18 for the game, including 0-8 in the second half. Boy do they need it to return and soon.
Earlier in the game CU still had issues on defense, especially stopping dribble penetration. At one point in the first half they went into a 2-3 zone.
Aija Putnina went down at the end of the first half with what turned out to be an injury to her had and did not play in the second half. It is possible that it is a break - not good news for the Buffs.
Kansas has a long, long way to go on offense. They were hands down the worst team the Buffs have played in the conference this season.

unkiemark, what's up with only 1,018 in attendance?
Surely somebody miscounted. Was there a major snow storm out there?

Attendance went south, too. Fickle fans only follow a winner in Boulder, so maybe they will return for the next home game. :p
Mark is right on with what he said. The three freshmen had excellent games and it was an excellent move by Kathy to take out Jackie in the first half. All they were doing at that point was looking for Jackie.
Kathy said in the post game that Aija may have broken some fingers. They are on her shooting hand. She also was having breathing problems.
Dunn played the entire second half and I think Jackie did also.
CU must play better to win, but we got this much needed W.

If I may answer for Mark, Row 6, nope, no one mis-counted, and I am not going to make any excuses for the crappy attendance.
I wish I could explain Boulder and CU fans for those of you who do not live here, but it's really not easy to do. As Lady Buff said, most CU fans only support a winner, and you lose a few games in a row, people don't show up. Also, it seems like attendance on the weekends is a lot of families with kids who don't want to disrupt their schedules during the week by keeping the kids out until after 9:00 pm.
Another problem we deal with is the number of transplants in Colorado. If you get the chance sometime, watch the crowds at our men's games, and you will notice more non-home team fans than at any other Big 12 arena. It's starting to become a problem at Bronco and Rockies games too.
CU has to do a better job of getting students in to the women's games to at least give us some sort of a home court advantage. There were a few students there last night, (ok maybe 5 of them) but they were harassing the KU team much as our team gets harassed at road games. At the A&M game, our brilliant promotions department was handing out pizzas to students who came to the game, but I watched that door for awhile, and a lot of them came through the door, grabbed their pizza and exited through another door.
Anything I missed, Mark?

I loved those 5 students in their Hannah Skildum wigs!
I have seen CU do t-shirt promotions for students where they pick up the t-shirts and leave. CU has never been able to draw students to the women's games and I've been attending since the very first women's games. Even when we were ranked in the top 10 in 94-95, students did not attend the games.
Just finished reading the Camera and Aija did break her finger on the last play of the second half. She may be out one to two weeks.

I watched a replay of the game this morning to see what happened. Looked like Aija tripped over Brittany Spears' foot and caught her fall with her hand causing her to break the finger. OUCH!
The first part of the game still scares me, that the buffs can go so long without having any flow on offense. I know in football they have refs come in spring and fall camp to call penaltites. Do they do that in basketball, it seems if they are calling traveling differently this year and nobody knows about it or the teams are sloppy. It made me wonder if refs come in fall camp and call scrimiges to get the teams used to how they are going to call in the fall. CU has never done well in attendance with this wed and sat schedule. they did alot better in the big 8 with a friday night and sunday afternoon game schedule. Plus they have not beaten anybody substantial at home in a long time. Wyoming does not have the name and i think till they beat a texas, oklahoma, baylor or such at home they are going to have trouble drawing more than a couple thousand people
The officiating so far this year is about as consistent as the stock market!!!!
At one point in the game last night I think travels were called on about 10 straight possessions!!!!!! Both teams couldn't seem to do whatever it was the refs wanted from them. Then it stopped for a while. Very frustrating for a fan watching that and I'm sure even more frustrating for the players.

I don't think I have ever seen so many traveling calls as we've had this year. I wish there was a stat for that. I really don't think Jackie has a clue as to why they are calling the traveling--especially when she has two players grabbing at her or pushing her in the back.

From this morning's BDC on last night's game:
http://www.buffzone.com/news/2008/jan/23/youngsters-lead-buffs-by-kansas/
As for the traveling calls, I too am mystified at exactly what now qualifies for a travel. It seems that many of the calls come as the player begins to move. I take this to mean that it must have something to do with the pivot foot.
Attendance? It's too frustrating for me to share my thoughts at this time. Let's just say that the dynamics in Boulder are very different from any other Big 12 school.

Let's just say that the dynamics in Boulder are very different from any other Big 12 school.Look at what Blair has accomplished. It isn't just the improving team that brings in the people - it is a focused campaign to fill the seats, build excitement, etc. etc. I have no idea whether or not M&M is heavily focused on attendance and if she is, what kind of support she is getting from the Athletic Department. It wasn't happenstance that filled Gallagher Iba for the OSU/OU game. Burke has been beating a lot of bushes and he obviously had heavy support from the marketing/promotion folks at just the right time. There are a lot of priorities and only so many hours in the day but if somebody isn't paying a lot of attention to attendance, nothing is going to happen.
