In the August issue of Women's Basketball magazine there is an article entitled "On the Edge," with interviews with six players who have been in/trying to get in/trying to get back in the WNBA. One of the six is Stacy Frese-Huber (ex-ISU), and this is the excerpt about her:

"Another player who played during the 2000 season is 5' 6" Iowa State graduate Stacy Frese-Huber, who was chosen in the third round of that year's draft by the Utah Starzz. She had a good season, at one point leading the league in free-throw percentage.

"In the autumn of 2000, Frese-Huber, a shooting guard, went to play in France but returned after two months due to a dissatisfying situation. She worked out throughout the winter and spring, and thought she was in great shape when she got to Starzz training camp in 2001. But then-coach Fred Williams cut her just before the start of the regular season.

"'I thought I proved I could play at that level,' says Frese-Huber, who after receiving no interest from any other teams, took an assistant coaching job at Evansville University. 'I think there are different things I can add to a team. Obviously, there are some things I can't do, but there are other players who can do those things.

"'It's disheartening to know you played for that many years, you worked so hard, you did all of that. I had a chance. I thought I did well. What else can a person do?'

"Frese-Huber continues to work out three to four hours a day. She is hesitant to go overseas again. For starters, her husband of nine months will not be able to go with her. And then she says who knows if it will make a difference.

"'I know a lot of players who played in college at the same time as me,' she notes. 'They've been playing overseas and they're still trying to get into the WNBA and it's not happening for them either. It's hard to know what to do. If you should hang it up. Or if someone is going to give you a chance.

"'I've asked many people's advice,' she adds. 'Right now, I'm just trying to wait and see what becomes available. I guess I'm going to cross that bridge when I come to it.'

"Frese-Huber was not invited to any WNBA training camps in 2002. She and her agent, Jeanne McNulty-King, are investigating overseas playing opportunities, but Frese-Huber, who has already begun studying for a master's in business administration, says she will probably coach another year at Evansville and try to attract attention from the WNBA."
