The Mystics tonight were not only without their top player, ascendant star Chamique Holdsclaw, they were without their starting point guard, Annie Burgess, who was held out for reasons I don't yet know.

And they were handicapped further by playing on the road against the #2 team in the WNBA Eastern Conference, the Orlando Miracle.

And this was the Mystics' 8th game on the road in their last 10. It's all downhill from here. By defeating the Miracle 63-51 on the road, the surprise contender from DC opened up a full 3 game lead on their nearest rival - now the Charlotte Sting, with only 14 games to play.

It's clear that the Mystics not only have had an improbable turnaround, but that they now are poised to join the two elite teams of the league to form a triumvirate of dominance along with the LA Sparks and Houston Comets.

The hero-of-the-day (and it seems that the Mystics are finding a different hero every day) was Coco Miller, who scored a game-high 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, 3-3 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 from the free throw line.

The jaw-dropping improvement of Coco Miller's contribution is only a reflection of a squad that is clearly playing with confidence and purpose, and a team that after being either a sorry also-ran or a doormat, has come together like almost no one could have imagined.

If you are like me, you love miracle underdog stories like this, regardless of the sport. I intend to continue to monitor this juggernaut-in-the-making, win or lose, for the rest of the WNBA season and the playoff.

They sure are making their fans proud. And another thing, the Mystics were absolutely in control of this game from well before the end of the first half until the end.

Murriel Page, Stacey Dales-Shuman and Vicky Bullet all made solid contributions to the win, with 13, 10 and 12 points respectively.

Those 3 players combined for 21 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals and 35 points in the game.

YCN,

That is a beautifully written message. What the Mystics have done this season is great. I truly believe it is the leadership of Stacy Dales that has helped pushed them up the WNBA pile, but I think this statement is a little premature-

You could well be right. Time will tell- it will take more than half a season to say this, though.

DblT81,

I based that statement on 2 things. One is the fact that they went on the road and beat the Comets for the first time - ever.

And the second is that they went to Staples and played the Sparks to a knock-down, drag-out war, which wasn't decided until the final minute of the game.

From what I see, this team has legs. We'll see when the going gets REALLY tough!

Not sure how the "going" can get much tougher with Holdsclaw out,
Burgess fighting injuries, Sauret leaving to return to France. Washington is looking for a free agent to plug up a hole, doesn't look as though Tausha Mills will ever live up to her high draft position and will forever be injured.

As I watched last night's game, I looked forward to the run and gun basketball that both Washington and Orlando play. Though, I'm obviously a Washington fan, the past 2 years I've rooted for Orlando and love their style of basketball......

but, last night, the game turned into a hodgepodge of inconsistent refereeing......they were letting the play get pretty physical in the paint, and were blowing the whistle every minute for illegal screens......too many whistles, too much interruption, no flow to the game........

Washington didn't have their best game last night, fortunately,
Orlando really didn't have their best game. Orlando could not get any offense going, Washington had enough bright spots...
Coco's 3-ball's were "ah, thank you"....and Vickey Bullet hit an awesome 3-ball....she was halfway to Miami when she took the shot. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Stacey wasn't hitting shots last night, so after a couple of misses.....she quit shooting. She was flat out open on one play and passed the ball and caused a turnover. Stanley pulled her and had a little talk with her on the bench, not sure what Stacey intended with the towel over her head as the head coach was talking to her.......wonder if she knew we were all watching?
