It's done. Congratulations, Connie!!!!!

Connie Yori was named as Nebraska-Enron's new womens basketball CEO. It is a big step up for Connie and a possible big step up for probably first officer assistant Amy Stephens, who Connie would like to bring in from her current job as head coach at UN-Kearney.

Official Chipper Position: This is a major risk for Nebraska, more so than any other hire.

Connie Yori is good people. She's got wry whit, as solid basketball smarts, and has a way with players to get them to play above their station.
Creighton took an undertalented, jump shot-first, no-size Creighton team to 24-7 last year on guts, greymatter and having the best player in the MVC step to the fore.

The downside to Connie Yori? Last year was an exception, not the rule. The average Connie Yori team at Creighton win 17 games and fails to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
The average Connie Yori team at Creighton was more often beaten than not by SW Missouri State and Drake, the two programs that have been the top standard in the MVC.

Connie Yori does well recruiting Iowa State-type players, but consider this Connie Yori has never beaten Iowa State under Bill Fennelly. Yoir's average recruits are a tier down.

And also consider one of Connie's best teams lost to the worst Nebraska team ever, last season.

Having Amy Stephens on the crew will be a fine addition she's been a consistent winner at Nebraska-Kearney, and she one of the best tacticians I've seen. Plus, she is a coach used to results and expects them. Exactly what this correct rudderless outfit needs.

But the downside to Stephens is that her UNK teams always were good enough to get to the postseason, they always feel short of the Division II Elite Eight. Every year, Stephens will race through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, but when the better teams came up in regionals, UNK would never play above their station and win.

In short, Nebraska chose a solid head coach, but in my mind they are gambling on products with pedigrees inferior. Any hope for success will rely on Yori's and Stephens' proven ability to get a lot out of a little, and Nebraska has very little in terms of talent, cohesion, ability or heart.

In any case, WELCOME!!!!!!!! You have a big job ahead http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

I look for Stephens to make the move to Creighton. She likes to stay close to home and she has mentioned that she would like to try the DI ranks. As far as Yori being named the Head Coach at Nebraska, I feel a little unsure about that. Sure Creighton has been decent the past few years and they were good in the early-mid 90's but they suffered a spell where the recruiting was questionable. She's just not quite the proven winner that Nebraska should have been seeking.

Hopefully she make me eat my words.
