People contacted officially as of 6-16-2002

Connie Yori (Head Coach--Creighton)
Amy Ruley (Head Coach--North Dakota State)

People who have expressed interest

Cheryl Burnett (Former Head Coach -- SW Missouri State)

People who have been rumored in the hunt

Tom Collen (Former Head Coach -- Colorado State)
Mickie DeMoss (Assistant Head Coach -- Tennessee)

People Rumored by popular sentiment

Amy Stephens (Head Coach -- Nebraska-Kearney)

Quite a field forming up. The addition of Amy Ruley into the mix is appealing as one of the top coaches in Division II (5 National Championships, not too shabby). The only caveat is with NDSU set to move to Division I by 2005, does Ruley want to move with the Bison?

hmmmm, very interesting, DeMoss would be.....this is the first year I've seen her name thrown into the ring. And folks have tried for years to lure her away from Tennessee.

I enjoy the comments that are posted down at the bottom of the article.....I read earlier today some guy complaining that women's bb coaches are commanding salaries of $250,000/yr.
It's really good to see, now that football salaries are up into the million...ssss.

DeMoss appears to be Nebraska's top choice:

wow, so many articles.......here's an excerpt from the one out of the Journal Star:

"I certainly think it's a very attractive job from the outside looking in," DeMoss said. "It has everything in place. It's just getting somebody in there that can get players in there and get some excitement going."

If that person's not DeMoss, then who might Byrne turn to?

Creighton Coach Connie Yori confirmed Monday that Byrne had contacted her last week, but declined comment about any interest she may have in the Nebraska job. Yori recently withdrew her name from consideration for the head coaching position at Southwest Missouri State. A former Creighton player, she's been the Bluejays' head coach for 10 years.

Byrne has also contacted former Colorado State coach Tom Collen, the only male candidate whose name has surfaced. Byrne and Collen met over breakfast Saturday in Omaha in what Collen called an informal meeting.

Collen hasn't spoken with Byrne since then but said he's interested in the opening.

Amy Ruley, head coach of NCAA Division II North Dakota State, said Byrne had left her a voice mail message about the job. Ruley said she plans on returning the call

I think that DeMoss would be a great choice for the job. After all the high school all-americans Tennessee has reeled in over the years, its obvious that she knows how to recruit.

"Nebraska = COLD"

What LadyVols fans are telling DeMoss...........

I've never thought Tennessee was exactly a sunny tropical paradise in the winter http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/tongue.gif
doesn't it get just as cold in Tennessee?

I also read over at the Boneyard that Nebraska is willing to pay
$350,000 to $400,000.........is that right?

Mickie is worth that kind of money, and change

As for the Tennessee folks at the Summitt...All I can say is...

They're scared
They are resorting to stereotypes and half-truths. That is how scared they are.

If she comes to Lincoln, GREAT! If she doesn't no big deal.

Ah, no. Not quite. Actually, not even close. In fact, no offense, but I couldn't help but smile at this. I've lived in Oak Ridge (20 minutes from Knoxville) and now in Ames (3.5 hours from Lincoln). During Knoxville winters, it will occasionally get "cold" at night, i.e., below freezing, requiring a medium-weight jacket. VERY rarely, the temperature might drop close to zero Fahrenheit (this would be approaching an all-time record daily low). If it should snow, the city will all but shut down, schools will close, and highway exits will be blocked. To a northerner (formerly from New York City), it was all a bit comical. To a midwesterner, it would seem quite hilarious.

What passes for "cold" in Knoxville would be nothing more than a brisk windless evening to an upper midwesterner. To a lifelong Knoxvillian, midwinter in the midwest, well . . . it would take some adjustments. And a really COLD midwest winter would mean getting up every day for weeks on end to face weather that one might never before have experienced even once.
