The NCAA approved a basketball rule eliminating free throws during a bonus situation when a foul is committed by the team with the ball.

It was tried as an experiment in men's basketball last season and will be made permanent for men and women next season, the NCAA rules committees decided at their annual meeting last week in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Now, when a foul is committed by a player on the team with the ball, instead of shooting free throws, play will be restarted with the other team given possession. The change makes the penalty for such fouls during the bonus the same as for fouls committed by the player with the ball.

Those who watched the ISU-BYU game may recall ISU committing several untimely offensive fouls (mostly illegal screens) that resulted in BYU freethrows. To ISU fans, this comes one year too late... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Ostensibly the rule is "to keep the game moving". This is a code phrase that means they don't know why they are changing the rule, but nobody told them it was a stupid idea. (Yeah, I remember seeing dozens of agonizingly long games last year due to all the silly offensive fouls while in the bonus. Right!)

They should now consider themselves told.

I don't think it's a bad rule.
In the past, if the team with the ball fouls, they are already getting penalized for losing possession. It's a double whammy when you add free throws to that.
Seems fair to me. Just another rule to keep up with.

The only times that I'm aware of that a team gets to keep possession of the ball after a free throw opportunity are:

1. The team shooting the free throws rebounds their own miss.
2. There was a technical foul against the other team, including flagrant fouls.
3. There was a intentional foul against the other team.

There may be others, but an offensive foul in a bonus situation isn't one of them.
