Before coming to UT and wearing No. 4 (Bowers) and No. 21 (Schreiber), Kala Bowers and Heather Schreiber wore those uniform numbers as high school All-Americans and State Players of the Year. Right now, their high school uniforms are in the "Ring of Honor" at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE-- The prep (high school) jerseys of two University of Texas freshman basketball standouts currently are on display in the "Ring of Honor" at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville. The No. 21 jersey worn by 6-2 Heather Schreiber (Windthorst, Texas) while at Windthorst High School and the No. 4 uniform worn by 6-2 Kala Bowers (Woodward, Okla./Woodward HS) are in the "Ring of Honor", which recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of high school and collegiate All-Americans.
Schrieber and Bowers are two of only a select group of 120 young women from across the country (high school and collegiate) to have their jerseys currently displayed at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
As high school seniors in 2000-01, both Schreiber and Bowers were the State Players of the Year, respectively, for Texas and Oklahoma. Bowers earned USA Today, Nike, AAU and WBCA All-America honors and was the Gatorade Circle of Champions and USA Today Player of the Year in Oklahoma. Schreiber finished her Windthorst career as a Parade, USA Today and AAU All-American and was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) State Player of the Year. Impressively, Schreiber was a First Team All-State standout in three sports - basketball, volleyball (leading Windthorst to a Texas-record four consecutive state titles as she was state tournament MVP all four years) and track (high jumping).
Both 6-2 players made immediate impacts for the Longhorns this year, helping head coach Jody Conradt's 22-10 squad to the NCAA National Championship "Sweet 16" and to a final No. 13 ranking nationally. Schreiber was selected as the Big 12 Rookie of the Year and was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention pick as she finished second in UT scoring (13.6 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.0 rpg). Schreiber led the Horns in three-point scoring, hitting 49 of 123 three-point attempts for a 40.0 percent accuracy. Bowers was fourth in scoring as a rookie (9.0 rpg) and finished the year with the best 3-point shooting accuracy of all Longhorns, connecting on 45.3 percent of her 3-pointers (24-of-53).
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame has had its recent share of honorees with University of Texas roots. Head coach Jody was enshrined into the WBHOF in the Hall's first class of inductees (1999), while former U.S. Olympic gold medalist, All-American and National Player of the Year Kamie Ethridge '86 was inducted into the WBHOF last weekend as one of eight members of the Class of 2002.
