Impressive!

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider basketball team has signed junior college standout Miklannet Tennal to a National Letter of Intent to attend Texas Tech this fall. Tech has now inked four student-athletes, including three who signed in November: Chesley Dabbs (Plano, Texas), LaToya Davis (Houston, Texas) and Erin Grant (Arlington, Texas).

Tennal, a 5-3 guard from Centralia, Kan., comes to Tech after playing two seasons at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan.

"We are excited to have such a great addition to our program," said head coach Marsha Sharp. "Miklannet is an outstanding player with great ability. She brings a championship mentality with her and we are looking forward to having her at Texas Tech."

While at Cloud County CC, Tennal was a two-time first team All-KJCC - West Division selection and a second team NJCAA All-American as a sophomore and a third team NJCAA All-American as a freshman. She was also named first team all-region two years. This past season Tennal averaged 23.6 points, 5.2 assists and 2.5 steals, while being named the Most Valuable Player in the Region VI Tournament and MVP of the NJCAA National Tournament. She is also the Region VI all-time leading scorer with 1,615 points. As freshman, her team was the NJCAA National Champions with a 31-7 record. This year her team was the Region VI runner-up and finished with a 27-7 mark.

Tennal attended Centralia High School prior to Cloud County CC, where she was a first team all-state for all classes and the Class 1A Player of the Year. She finished her high school career as the fifth all-time leading scorer in Kansas State High School girls' basketball history with over 2,600 points.

Any KSU fans know anything about her?

Work has kept me away, but I wanted to add something from the Lubbock AJ article that you all might find interesting.

The full story can be found at http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/042302/col_0423020012.shtml

This perhaps adds more fuel to the concerns about the Nebraska program.

Tennal, who hails from small-town Centralia, Kan., said she was tempted by the proximity of Nebraska, but ultimately was swayed by Sharp's high standards of winning.

"I did have a really good visit at Nebraska and it was close to home," Tennal said. "But the difference between the two programs was coach Sharp's expectations. ... (Nebraska coach Paul Sanderford) was looking at me to turn the program around for him. He didn't have the high expectations that I'm used to."

Can't wait for chipper to read and respond to that!!!!!!!

It might be a book or at least a medium sized story.

Metro, all I'll say is. Out of the mouths of babes.

You know my little cousin India woke up in cold sweat last night, she had a nightmare.

I asked the little kid "what's wrong?"

She said, "Paul Sanderford's trying to recruit me."

I thought about putting that same quote at the time BballGirl but I knew that Chipper would have a *few* things to say about it. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/eek.gif This player has really gotten me excited. The LR need that attitude of "refuse to lose" and they got it for this coming season, with Tennal and Grant. Both came from basketball powers that ALWAYS WIN.

You got a winner from a winning program. Good luck.

Chipper---As I laughed and chuckled out loud, I also hope India's fever broke as soon as the fear of the nightmare subsided. Give her a hug for me.

Just out of curiosity do you think that her 5'3 ht will have a disavantage to her D-1 game. Also a couple of years ago, TT had a small point guard sign out of Houston, she played AAU with the Houston Hot Shots does anyone know what happened to her?

But what is really great is that good recruits are coming to the Big 12 teams. LOVE the "sharing of the wealth".

Maybe some of the girls are seeing the rewards in turning programs around and not just stepping into the Conneticut/Tennessee cycle.

Courtney Pastner transferred to U of H and played last year but not sure how her year went. I think she was one of those kids that came out of HS the 5-A POY and discovered how tough and physical the the B12 can be.

The thing about Tennal, she's looks very strong and possibly be as scrappy as anyone on the team today. I hope that's the case and scoring 29 ppg wouldn't hurt either.

Courtney played half of the year with Houston. She eventually left the team for medical reasons. She probably will never suit up again.
Being 5'3 has its disadvantages but I do not think that Tennall will suffer at all. She a great player with great skills. TT got a great player.

From what I've heard from Cloud County fans:

What Tennal loses in height she makes up with her speed and DEEP range on the three. She has plenty of hussle and heart. Best of all, she comes from a winning program where she has been taught that there are no moral victories. CC fans have also said that her opponents have tried MANY defenses and plenty of double teams yet she finds a way to fight through that to persevere. Tennal and Grant will be one of the better back courts in the Big XII next year not to mention Pierson and Greenwalt will be one of the best front courts in the Big XII if not the country. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Regarding the height question, you only have to look at Debbie Black to see how good a 5'3" point guard can be. She played professionally overseas then came to Denver with the ABL team and, since the demise of the ABL, has been playing in the WNBA. She holds her own with all those big players by being scrappy etc.

This kid seems very similar to former Iowa guard Stephanie Schueler. A small girl with some girth to her who can play the game. If she plays up to her JUCO stats, her plus Erin Grant (who I really enjoyed in her two all-star game appearance) will be a formidable piece of a team that is one of the early favorites for next years championship chase.

I dare say she is already shown All-Big 12 potential in the area of bulletin board material.

Debbie Black...the offensive guard's worst defensive nightmare..was exactly who I thought about when I heard about Tennal. Another comparison is the PG for Vandy whose name I can never spell correctly. Tennal looks to have some wide shoulders and solid legs..very different from Pastner. I'm looking forward to seeing this young woman play ball. Counting down the days already.
